Ordre national du Lion
The Ordre national du Lion (German: “Nationaler Löwenorden”) is the highest honor in Senegal . It was founded on October 22nd, 1960, the year Senegal gained independence.
The President of the Republic is by virtue of his office Grand Master of the Order. In this role he is supported by a grande chancellerie (large law firm). The large chancellery is subordinate to a general of the armed forces, a holder of the National Lion Order with the title Grand Chancellier de l'Ordre national du Lion (Grand Chancellor of the National Lion Order). He is appointed by a decree of the Council of Ministers.

The order is divided into five classes:
The award of the special class of the Grand Cross with Order Chain is reserved for foreign heads of state.
Order decoration
The medal is a white enamelled five-pointed star . The rays end in golden balls. It is underlaid with rays of a golden star. The gold medallion in the center of the star shows a lion turned to the right under a star, surrounded by a red ring with the gold inscription: "République du Sénégal - Un peuple, un but, une foi".
The ribbon is green and connected to the star by means of two crossed silver palm fronds.
