Oreichhys is a genus of small Asian carp fish (Cyprinidae). The genus is distributed with six species from India, Bangladesh , Burma and Thailand to the north of the Malay Peninsula .

features

Oreichhys species have a typical barbel shape , similar to Puntius and are three to eight centimeters long. In contrast to almost all other barbel genera, the fish show a clear sexual dimorphism , ie males and females can be easily distinguished from one another. The males become larger and have a significantly raised dorsal fin.

The genus was in 1933 first description of oreichthys parvus by the American ichthyologists H. M. Smith set up, but little by genre typical characteristics defined . A characteristic feature of the genus are the numerous sensory spores on the head, which at that time were otherwise known among carp fish only in Cyclocheilichthys , a genus of much larger carp fish. From Oreochromis differs oreichthys by the smooth last unbranched dorsal fins beam at Oreochromis is developed as a sting and sawed.
