Oreophryne celebensis is an amphibian of the family -mouthed (Microhylidae).

features

The species reaches a length of 30 millimeters. The coloring is very variable. The top of the body is yellowish, reddish, rose-red or brown and monochrome, darkly spotted or marbled. The forehead is sometimes pink on top with a dark canthal stripe and a triangular dark spot between the eyes or with an X- or hourglass-shaped mark between the eyes and the shoulders. Occasionally there is a light longitudinal line in the middle of the back. The underside is gray or brownish and speckled solid or dark brown. The front head is short and rounded, the canthus rostralis weak. The interorbital space is as wide as slightly wider than an upper eyelid . The eardrum is indistinct and about half as wide as the diameter of the eye. The first finger is shorter than the second. The adhesive discs on the fingertips are very large and much larger than those on the short, free toes. The third toe is significantly longer than the fifth toe. There are no subarticular cusps or metatarsal cusps . With the hind leg placed forward against the body, the tibiotarsal joint extends to the eye or a little beyond it. The skin is smooth on top or covered with scattered warts. Sometimes there is a small bump on the upper eyelid. The belly is granulated. Males have no vocal sacs .

Occurrence

Oreophryne celebensis occurs in the north of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi at altitudes above 1000 meters. She lives in mountain forests. Their eggs are believed to be laid on the ground and develop directly into frogs without the tadpole stage.

Systematics

Oreophryne celebensis was first described by Fritz Müller in 1894 as Sphenophryne celebensis . Lajos Méhelÿ placed the species in the genus Oreophryne in 1901 .

Oreophryne celebensis is classified by the IUCN as "Vulnerable" (endangered).
