Oreophrynella quelchii is a species of South American toad belonging to the genus Oreophrynella . In German it is sometimes referred to as a Scheinkrötchen . The species is named after the British zoologist John Joseph Quelch (1854−?).

description

The body is 22 millimeters long and black. The throat and belly are mottled or marbled light yellow. The top is covered with distinctive warts of various sizes, the bottom with smaller, flatter warts. The muzzle is short, rounded and not protruding. The Canthus rostralis is pronounced. The interorbital space is as wide as the upper eyelids. The fingers are very short and connected at the base by thick skin. They are a little swollen at the end. The first, second and fourth fingers are the same length, the third is the longest. The toes are also very short and connected at the base. The first and fifth are the same, the fourth is a bit longer, and the second and third are the shortest. The palms of the hands and soles of the feet are warty, the carpal and tarsal tubercles are fairly flat. The metatarso-digital joint reaches the eye. Males do not have a vocal sac .

Occurrence and way of life

Oreophrynella quelchii occurs exclusively on the Roraima tepui and the Wei Assipo tepui . It was found at altitudes of 2300 to 2800 meters above sea level.

The false toad is diurnal and can be found on open rock surfaces in the high-montane level. The species develops directly in the eggs without the tadpole stage .
