Boulenger , 1895 |
Oreophrynella is a South American genus of the frog from the toad family(Bufonidae). It wasfirst describedby George Albert Boulenger in 1895.
description
The pupils are aligned horizontally. The tongue is elliptical in shape, with entire margins and free behind; the palate is smooth. There is no eardrum . The eustachi tube is extremely tiny. Fingers and toes are short, blunt and have no pronounced webbed feet - but this does not apply to the species O. seegobini, which was newly described in 2009 . The feet can grip, the inner toe is opposable and longer than the second. The coracoid and precoracoid are very strongly developed. The former form an extensive structure in the middle with the latter and encompass a fairly small, circular foramen on all sides. There is no omosternum . The sternum is cartilaginous. The diaphyses of the sacral vertebrae are greatly dilated.
distribution
The area of the genus includes Tepuis in the south of central Venezuela and in neighboring Guyana.
Systematics
The genus Oreophrynella was first described by Boulenger as Oreophryne in 1895 . The type species is Oreophrynella quelchii . But since a few days before the publication of the first description O. Boettcher had already used the name Oreophryne for a different genus, Boulenger proposed in the same year that the name be changed to Oreophrynella , which is still valid today .
The genus currently includes the following 8 species:
As of August 30, 2019
- Oreophrynella cryptica Señaris, 1995
- Oreophrynella huberi Diego-Aransay & Gorzula, 1990
- Oreophrynella macconnelli Boulenger, 1900
- Oreophrynella nigra ( pebble toad ) Señaris, Ayarzagüena & Gorzula, 1994
- Oreophrynella quelchii Boulenger, 1895
- Oreophrynella seegobini Kok, 2009
- Oreophrynella vasquezi Señaris, Ayarzagüena & Gorzula, 1994
- Oreophrynella weiassipuensis Señaris, Nascimento & Villarreal, 2005
- Oreophrynella dendronastes Lathrop & MacCulloch, 2007 was synonymous with Oreophrynella macconnelli Boulenger, 1900 .
