history

New organ built 1774–1776

After the previous organ with the church burned down in 1770, Adam Gottlob Casparini from Königsberg was asked to build a new instrument. The contract was signed on January 19, 1774, and 350 gold pieces were promised. There is an inscription from this year in the wind chest of the cymbal register from his student Christoph Braveleit, who was obviously involved in the work. The prospectus was designed by Johann Holz from Vilnius, eight sculptures were carved by Anton Grosman. The organ was completed in the spring of 1776, and an inscription said March 20th. Paintings and gilding were made until 1787.

Some minor work was done in the 19th century. Around 1900 the keyboard of the manuals and the pedal were replaced.

Restoration 1995-2006

Since 1995 the organ building company of Rimantas Gučas from Vilnius has been restoring the organ. At the same time, a reconstruction of the instrument for Christ Church in Rochester, New York, began in 2000. This was intended to expand knowledge about the design of the instrument through detailed analyzes and thus support the restoration in Vilnius. The register Vox humana had to be recreated because the original was no longer available. The keyboard of the manual could be made from preserved parts of the Casparini organ from Barciany (Barten). In 2006 the restoration work was completed.
