Jan Janca (actually Harald Janca ; born June 1, 1933 in Danzig ) is a Polish-German organist and composer .

Career

Jan Janca comes from a German-Polish family in Danzig. He received his first organ lessons from his father, the organist Anton Janca . After graduating from the state music school in Gdansk- Langfuhr , he studied organ with Bronisław Rutkowski and composition with Stanisław Wiechowicz at the Kraków Music Academy from 1950 to 1955 . He then worked as a freelance organist. The first recordings were made with concerts in Oliva Cathedral .

After a concert tour in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1957, he did not return to Poland. From 1958 to 1962 Janca studied composition with Johann Nepomuk David at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart . Later he was a private student of Marcel Dupré in Paris for several years . From 1962 to 1996 Janca was a music teacher at the Wilhelmsstift in Tübingen and organist at the Johanneskirche in Tübingen . He also taught at the Episcopal Music School in Rottenburg .

He composed several organ works that he initially left unpublished and is the author of several works on the history of organ building, particularly in West Prussia (which is now part of northern Poland). Janca had been suffering from tinnitus since the late 1990s - the disease started before he retired - but he was gradually able to compensate for it, so that artistic work was still possible. Since 1990 he has devoted himself increasingly to composing, and from 2008 he has occasionally been active again as an organist in concerts and in the liturgy.
