The organs of the Würzburg Cathedral , consecrated in 1969, were built by the Bonn-based organ manufacturer Klais . The previous instrument was built in 1937, but was completely destroyed in the Second World War. The organ system consists of the five-manual main organ with 87 registers on the western singing gallery and the choir organ in the southern transept, which has 20 registers. Since 2012, both instruments can be played together by the transept organ as well as the main organ.

Cathedral organ

Building history

New building in 1937 by Klais

The organ system built in 1937 by the organ manufacturer Klais consisted of three sub-organs: one in the south transept, one in the north transept and a bombardment over the west portal with a total of 80 stops on four manuals and pedal.

New building by Klais in 1969

The organ system, built in 1969, which Johannes Klais Orgelbau had made, consists of the main organ with 87 stops on the inner west wall of the nave and the choir organ with 20 stops on a gallery in the south transept. The cathedral clock from 1574 with its baroque stucco frame is integrated into the modern prospectus .

Overhaul 2012

In 2012, as part of the interior renovation of the cathedral, the organ was also overhauled by the builder company. She created a new, central console in the area of the transept organ, from which both organs can now be played. The former two-manual console of the transept organ with mechanical action gave way to a four-manual general console with electric action . In this way the organist is closer to the liturgical events around the ambo and can also accompany the congregation singing from here with the main organ. The registers of the transept organ on the main organ console are located in a drawer on the left of the console and can be placed anywhere on the manuals of the main organ console. Due to the acoustic delays when playing, microphones were hung in front of both organs, which the other organ transmits via monitor boxes to the console. In addition, a positive register has been replaced (now trumpet 8 ′), the instrument has been cleaned and the intonation has been revised more fundamentally. The action action of the main organ has been revised and the swell box has been re-insulated to improve the voice posture of the swell . Finally, the housing was given a new color version .
