Oskar Kaul

Hermann Friedrich Oskar Kaul (born October 11, 1885 in Bruckmühl - Heufeld , † July 17, 1968 in Unterwössen ) was a German musicologist and professor in Würzburg .

Life

Oskar Kaul was born in 1885 as the son of the chemist Alexander Kaul (1845–1913) and Clara Hoffmanns (* 1855) in the Upper Bavarian Heufeld , municipality of Bruckmühl . After elementary school he attended a humanistic grammar school in Cologne , then in 1905 he went to the local conservatory to study music . He was u. a. Students of Max van de Sandt , Lazzaro Uzielli , Fritz Steinbach , Ewald Straeßer and Waldemar von Baußnern . At the same time he studied German and philosophy at the University of Bonn . In 1908 he moved to Munich and studied musicology a . a. with Adolf Sandberger and Theodor Kroyer . There he also became a member of the AGV Munich . Kaul his doctorate there in 1911 on the vocal works Anton Rosetti to Dr. phil. A year-long teaching activity at the Krefeld Conservatory was followed by a call to the Royal Music School in Würzburg in 1912 . Ten years later he was charged with a thesis on the history of Wurzburger Hof music in the 18th century habilitation . In the summer he finally admitted - for the first time in the history of the Würzburg School of Music - music history lectures. Oskar Kaul strove to expand musicology and achieved this: in 1928 he was appointed as an extraordinary professor . In the Third Reich , the subject became more important due to ideology. In the first trimester of 1941, at the insistence of Kaul in Würzburg, a regular musicological seminar was approved and set up by the Reich Ministry of Education , and he himself was appointed seminar chair. During this time, from 1942 to 1944, he was also active as an undercover agent for the SD in the Würzburg music scene. During the Second World War , Kaul left the university.

In 1957 he was a co-founder of the Society for Bavarian Music History , of which he was chairman until 1967.

Kaul died on July 17, 1968 at the age of 82 in Unterwössen, Upper Bavaria .
