details
Today's cruise line went in 2005 from the shipping company Orion Navigation Company Reith & Co. forth. Its roots lie in a partnership between the shipping company Johann MK Blumenthal, founded in 1901 in Rostock, on April 7, 1931 . In 1939, the shipping company relocated its headquarters to Hamburg in order to be closer to major customers and to present itself in Germany's main port.
Until the 1970s and 1980s, the "Orion" shipping company mainly operated second-hand tonnage and began a newbuilding program at Japanese shipyards in the early 1990s. In total, more than 200 ocean-going vessels, mainly general cargo , container and bulk carriers, were operated under the Orion flag.
Since the business split between the aforementioned Reith brothers on July 1, 2005, the previously joint operation in the shipping company Johann MK Blumenthal under the management of Matthias-K. Reith and Orion Reederei GmbH & Co. KG is managed in the fourth and fifth generations by Johann Stephan Reith and Johann-Philipp Reith.
The administration is carried out by around 45 specialists on land, around 700 seafarers are employed in the "Orion" fleet of 35 bulk carriers with a carrying capacity between 24,021 and 178,076 tons. The shipping fleet consists of several series of series ships of the sizes Handysize , Capesize , Panamax and Supramax , the total load of the fleet is 2,690,608 tons. The age of the ships is very young with an average of six years. In 2010 about seven million tons were transported, in 2015 about sixteen million tons of cargo. The predominant cargoes were grain, coal, iron ore, fertilizer and steel cargoes.
