Oronoshima ( Japanese 小呂 島 ) is an island in the Sea of Japan that belongs to the Japanese community of Fukuoka .

geography

Oronoshima is located in the Genkai-nada marine area in the Sea of Japan between the island of Iki, 24 km away in the west and the island of Ōshima in the east, 34 km away . It is also located 27 km northwest of the Itoshima Peninsula on mainland Japan. Nevertheless, administratively it does not belong to the nearby municipality of Itoshima , but to the neighboring city of Fukuoka to the east.

The island has an area of 0.43 km² and is 1590 m long and 708 m wide. Oronoshima is comparatively flat, but rises comparatively steeply on the coast except in the north and south. The highest point is a 109.3 m unnamed, gently rising hill. To the north is the 109 m high Mukōyama ( 向 山 ).

In January 2012, 206 people lived on the island in 67 households, most of which are located in the very south between the hill and the harbor. North of the hill are mainly the elementary and middle schools and the desalination plant .

history

The island was a waypoint on the trade route with China between the 10th and 13th centuries . However, the current inhabitants go back to the 17th century when the Fukuoka fiefdom settled fishermen here to expand their territory. In 1961 the settlement and with it the island were incorporated into the city of Fukuoka.
