Orsini (* 1954, † 1975) was an English thoroughbred horse that was bred by the Thyssen von Ticino family from Orange at the Erlenhof stud farm .

ancestry

It descends in direct line in the 14th generation of Eclipse . His sire line is the most successful in German thoroughbred breeding. Landgraf - Ferro - Athanasius - Ticino - Orsini - Marduk were the winners in the » German Derby « in uninterrupted succession over 6 generations . This is also a unique series internationally. Along with Neckar and Dutch , Orsini was one of his father Ticino's best sons . Orsini's mother Orange had solid class, won even three races and had a maximum estimate of 80 kg GAG .

Racing career

Orsini started in 26 races, won 14 of them and was placed 6 times. His total winnings amounted to DM 535,600. It was the second highest sum that a German racehorse had ever won by then. Only his mother's grandfather, Oleander , was even more successful with 580,950 marks (no DM) in the period from 1926 to 1929.

Orsini won all major two-year races in 1956. As the winner of the "Henckel Race" (now the " Mehl-Mülhens Race ") and the "German Derby", he was a double classic winner. There were general doubts about his stamina, which is why he won the last classic race, the »St. Leger " , not called up and therefore could not achieve the " triple crown " .

Like his father, he demonstrated his ability to sprint and stamina by winning not only the 2,400 m race, but also the silver whip race (1,400 m race distance, now a so-called “list race”). More recently, only Manduro has been similarly versatile and independent of distance .

Orsini competed in seven countries, namely England, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, France and the United States, was placed in the "Prix de Moulin de Longchamp" in France, won the "Grand International d'Ostende", one of the most important races in Belgium and was 5th in the "Washington DC International", the most valuable invitation race in the world at the time. For the time and taking into account the means of transport available, Orsini was a true globetrotter.

His best performance was 5th place in the "King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes" at Ascot , the most important age comparison race of the English racing season and one of the most important horse races in the world. The race was then endowed with around 277,000 DM (23,642 £) for the winner. For comparison: The "German Derby" had a total endowment of 100,000 DM. With a deficit of 3½ lengths on the winner, it achieved the best placement of a German horse in this renowned race to date. As a young rider, Lester Piggott , the English jockey legend, was often Orsini's partner and in an interview he gave on the occasion of his departure from racing in Germany in the 1980s, he explained that Orsini was one of the best horses he has ever ridden in his career.

Breeding career

Orsini is the father of 15 offspring who were victorious or placed in classic races. With Ilix , Elviro , Don Giovanni and Marduk he is the father of 4 winners in the »German Derby«. He is at the head of the successful father horses of Derby winners with his father Ticino , Hannibal and Dark Ronald . He is also the father of Mata Hari , the winner in the »French 1,000 Guineas«. Mata Hari is the full sister of the German derby winner Marduk .

Orsini is also the father of many successful class horses such as Cortez , Ipanema , Ovid , Gulf Stream and the sire Mato Grosso, who is well-established in half-blood horse breeding . In the stallion line, the line from Landgraf - Orsini has since expired, but he still has an influence on German thoroughbred breeding through various mare lines.

He was the winner of the German championship for sire horses in 1966, 1969, 1971 and 1974.
