Orthonotus rufifrons is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 3.9 to 4.6 millimeters (males) or 3.0 to 3.4 millimeters (females). They are dark in color and covered with pale hairs. There is a sexual dimorphism between the males and the females . Females have shortened (brachyptere) hemielytres and are more rounded. The males are fully winged (macrotper) and have a more elongated body with parallel side edges. The females have a dark ring at the base of the second antenna segment , while the males have the entire segment black. The females also have a dark red head. The nymphs are colored bright red.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is distributed in Europe, south to the northern edge of the Mediterranean, east to the Caucasus. It is widespread and not uncommon in Germany and Austria. Dry and open habitats are seldom settled, but rather damp, shady places such as alluvial forests.
Way of life
The bugs live on the great nettle ( Urtica dioica ). They suckle on the plant sap as well as on small insects, especially aphids . The bugs suckle on the immature female reproductive organs and on the leaves, stems and even the stinging hairs. The nymphs usually appear in May, the adult bedbugs from June, rarely earlier and can be observed until September.
