Orthotrichum diaphanum , the wafer-thin golden hair moss , is a moss that is particularly common near human settlements and grows on tree bark and stones. It differs from the other species of the genus Orthotrichum by the hyaline glass tip.
Occurrence
The moss colonizes the bark of living trees and is also often found on rock. It is a species found throughout the Northern Hemisphere that loves nitrophilic (nitrogen-rich) locations. It also occurs disjointly in southern South America . The species occurs today particularly in the vicinity of humans. It is currently widespread, especially in cities. It is considered to be one of the most common native epiphytic deciduous mosses. Against sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), it is different from other Orthotrichum relatively resistant species.

features
The moss forms cushions up to 1 cm high. It has oval-elliptical leaves, the leaf edges of which are rolled back. The midrib ends in front of the leaf tip and ends in a clearly hyaline (shimmering) glass tip. The capsule is almost completely sunk into the leaves. When dry, it has 8 distinct furrows.
