Orthotylus ericetorum is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 3.0 to 3.8 millimeters long. The species of the genus Orthotylus are predominantly green in color. Many are extremely similar and are therefore very difficult to determine based on external characteristics. The host plants of the respective individuals are therefore an important indicator. Orthotylus ericetorum has an upper side of the body with dark, upright hair. The veins of the membrane and the cuneus of the hemielytres are variable yellow in color. The nymphs are yellowish green.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is found in almost all of Europe and North Africa. It is widespread in Germany and occurs wherever its host plants also grow. It is especially common in the northwest and at higher altitudes. In Austria it is widespread in the higher altitudes, but is absent in the Pannonian East. Dry and warm heathland as well as moist moorland are settled. They tolerate both completely open and partially shaded habitats such as sparse pine forests.

Way of life

The bugs live on heather ( Calluna vuigaris ) and heather ( Erica ). The bugs especially suckle on the maturing reproductive organs, the nymphs sometimes also on the leaves and stems. The nymphs hatch from May and develop into adults by mid-July. These usually live until mid-September, but isolated females can still appear in October. One generation is trained every year.
