The Orto Botanico dell'Università di Roma "La Sapienza" , also Orto Botanico di Roma , is a botanical garden operated by the University of La Sapienza in Rome ; the street address is Largo Cristina di Svezia 24, Rome , Italy . It can currently be visited for a fee from Tuesday to Saturday; the garden is closed in August.

history

The garden was created in 1883 as a successor to the papal botanical gardens dating back to the Renaissance. It is located on the slope of the Gianicolo hill and overlooks the 17th century Palazzo Corsini , where Queen Christina of Sweden lived from 1659 to 1689 . Today the main office of the Accademia dei Lincei is located here . Part of the current Botanical Garden was once the private garden of the Palazzo Corsini. After the palace became the property of the Italian state, this garden was combined with the existing papal gardens.

Today the garden has more than 3,000 species of plants. There are u. a. a Japanese garden , an important collection of bamboo plants , an aroma garden and a department with over 300 medicinal plants. The rarer species include Cedrus deodara , Dasylirion glaucophyllum and Dasylirion acrotrichum , Erythrina crista-galli and Liquidambar orientalis . There are several greenhouses with collections of cacti, bonsai , carnivorous plants, and tropical plants, including milkweed and orchids .
