Dasylirion acrotrichum is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Sotol, Green Desert Spoon".

description

Dasylirion acrotrichum forms a trunk 50 to 150 cm high, which is sometimes branched. The stiff, variable, slightly roughened, warty, green, dense leaves are 30 to 50 cm long and 9 to 13 mm wide. The irregularly arranged radial spines are directed upwards. The bushy / fibrous, white to gray tips are irregularly spread.

The panicley, woody, narrow inflorescence becomes 2 to 4 m high. The numerous flowers are cream-colored. The flowering period extends from June to July.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits contain 1 seed and are 6 to 7 mm long and 4 to 5 mm wide. The triangular to elongated seeds are 3.5 mm long and 2 to 2.5 mm wide.

Distribution and systematics

Dasylirion acrotrichum is widespread in Mexico in the states of Hidalgo, Puebla, Queretaro, Guanajuato, and Mexico at altitudes of 2400 to 3000 m. It grows in desert areas on stony slopes, associated with Yucca decipiens , agave species and various Opuntia species.

It was first mentioned as Yucca acrotricha in 1829 by Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede . A detailed description was given shortly afterwards by Julius Hermann Schultes . Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini placed the species in the genus Dasylirion in 1840 . One of the numerous synonyms is Dasylirion gracile (Brongn.) Zucc.

The rare Dasylirion acrotrichum is a member of the Dasylirion section . The robust, short, strong, sometimes branched trunks are characteristic. The variable, stiff, slightly roughened, warty, green, dense leaves with fibrous / bushy end tips are typical. Nevertheless, differences in leaf structure can be seen compared to the closely related Dasylirion parryanum . In the botanical garden Hanbury in La Mortola, Italy, imposing specimens can be visited.

Dasylirion acrotrichum can withstand short periods of frost down to minus 5 ° C.
