Yucca decipiens is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

The solitary Yucca decipiens (common name in another language: Izote Yucca) is stem-forming and reaches a height of eight to twelve meters. The trunk has a diameter of 1 to 2 meters. The stiff, green, 0.3 to 0.5 meter long leaves form fibers on the leaf edges.

The branched, upright or to the side inclined inflorescence is 1 to 1.5 meters long. The flowers are 2 to 3.5 cm long and 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter. The six identical bloom bracts are white to cream-colored. The flowering period extends from January to April.

distribution

Yucca decipiens is common in Mexico in the states of San Louis Potosí , Zacatecas and Durango , Jalisco , Guanajuato and Aguascalientes , on plains and low hills at altitudes between 1750 and 2650 meters. This species is often associated with Yucca carnerosana , Agave stricta , Agave durangensis and other Agave , Nolina , Mammillaria and Opuntia species.

It is little known and rare in culture. The Huntington Botanical Gardens, California, grow old specimens 10 m tall. When dry, frost hardy to minus 15 ° C. Specimens can be admired in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Systematics

Yucca decipiens is placed within the genus of the palm lilies ( Yucca ) in the section Yucca , Treculianae series . It is related to Yucca filifera . In contrast to this, it has a drooping inflorescence.

The first description by the American botanist William Trelease under the name Yucca decipiens was published in 1907.
