Yucca carnerosana is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
description
The solitary species is trunk-forming and reaches a height of 2 to 8 meters. The variable stiff leaves form fibers on the leaf edges.
The upright inflorescence becomes 1 to 2 meters high.
Yucca carnerosana has similarities to Yucca torreyi , but the rosettes appear less compact.
Occurrence
Yucca carnerosana is common in the Chihuahua Desert in Mexico and in mountainous regions of Texas up to altitudes of 2200 meters. This species often grows together with Yucca torreyi , Yucca rostrata and Yucca filifera .
When dry, it is frost-hardy to minus 20 ° C. Ancient specimens can be seen in Belen and Albuquerque, New Mexico. In Europe, plants raised from seeds grow very slowly. Four-year-old seedlings just reach a height of 20 cm.
Systematics
The first description by the American botanist William Trelease under the name Samulea carnerosana was published in 1902. The American botanist Susan Adams McKelvey placed the species under the species name Yucca carnerosana , which is valid today, in the genus Yucca ; their description was published in 1938. Another synonym for the species is Yucca australis Trelease .
The species Yucca carnerosana is placed within the genus Yucca in the section Yucca and therein in the series Faxonianae .
