Yucca rostrata (English common name : Big Bend-Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca rostrata grows solitary and forms a trunk 1 to 4 meters high. The variable blue to blue-green, rough leaves are 25 to 60 cm long and 1 to 1.5 cm wide. Like all representatives of the Chaenocarpa series Rupicolae, they are finely serrated on the leaf margins.

The densely branched inflorescence that begins above the leaves is 1 to 2 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, white, cream-colored flowers are 3 to 6 cm long and up to 3.5 cm wide. The flowering period extends from March to April.

It is related to Yucca thompsoniana another representative of the section Chaenocarpa series Rupicolae . However, it is larger in all dimensions.

In Central Europe, Yucca rostrata is frost hardy to –20 ° C when it is dry in the winter months. This species has been cultivated in the F. Hochstätter collection for over a decade.

distribution

Yucca rostrata is common on the Edwards Plateau in Texas and in Mexico in the states of Chihuahua , Coahuila on plains or flat hills in stony soils at altitudes between 600 and 800 m. This species often grows in association with various agave and numerous cactus species.
