Otto von Essen

Otto Ludwig Rudolph Heinrich von Essen (born May 20, 1898 in Hamburg ; † February 6, 1983 there ) was a German phonetician .

Life

Before 1921, Essen worked as a primary school teacher in Hamburg. Subsequently he was a teacher at German schools in South West Africa from 1921 to 1928 . a. in Windhoek , and worked with children with speech and voice disorders. He then studied phonetics in Germany until 1934 and completed his doctorate . He later worked at the Phonetic Laboratory in Hamburg , which was founded in 1909 by Carl Meinhof .

In 1938 Essen completed his habilitation and in 1949 took over the management of the laboratory. In 1950 and 1966 he was the successor of Giulio Panconcelli-Calzia (1878-1966) Associate Professor of Phonetics at the University of Hamburg . In the 1950s he was also the first chairman of the “Working Group for Speech Therapy in Germany”.

Otto von Essen endeavored both to increase scientific knowledge and at the same time to help people with speech impairments. Especially after his stay abroad, the traditional connection between African and South Sea languages ​​on the one hand and phonetics on the other was intensively cultivated. Both sides have benefited. Without the possibility of a phonetic laboratory, however, it would not have been possible to carry out fundamental experimental investigations, and thus many papers on these languages ​​would not have appeared.
