The Torrey Yucca ( Yucca torreyi ) (English trivial name : Torrey's Yucca, Spanish Yucca) is a plant of the genus of yucca ( Yucca ) in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae).
description
The Yucca torreyi , which grows solitary or with several trunks , reaches a height of up to five meters. The rough, yellow to green, fibrous 0.3 to 1 meter long leaves are arranged variably.
The upright, branched, dense inflorescence that begins between the leaves is 0.5 to 0.8 meters long. The spherical to bell-shaped variable flowers have a length of 3.5 to 7.5 cm and a diameter of 0.6 to 1.8 cm. The six identical bracts are cream-colored and purple-colored at the base. The flowering period is from March to May.
The Torrey palm lily is a member of the Yucca section , Treculianae series . It is related to Yucca treculiana . The strong, twisted, variably arranged fibers on the leaf edges are characteristic. In contrast, the leaves of Yucca treculiana are barely fibrous.
When dry, Yucca schottii is frost hardy to minus 15 ° C. Specimens can be seen in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Large plants can be found in Europe e.g. B. in the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and in Mediterranean regions.
distribution
The Torrey palm lily grows in Mexico and the USA in the Chihuahua Desert in open grasslands and on flat hills at altitudes between 300 and 1700 meters. Yucca elata , Yucca thompsoniana , Yucca baccata , Yucca reverchonii and various agave and cactus species are often associated with this species .
Systematics
The botanical name honors the American botanist John Torrey .
The first description by John Adolph Shafer under the name Yucca torreyi was published in 1908.
