Yucca reverchonii (English common name : San Angelo-Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca reverchonii grows solitary and without trunk. In old age it forms small, dense groups 0.4 to 1 meter in diameter. The 25 to 50 cm long, 1 to 2 cm wide, stiff, green leaves are finely serrated on the leaf edges.

The strongly branched inflorescence that begins above the leaves becomes 1 to 2 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, white to cream-colored flowers are 3.5 to 6 cm in length and 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter. The flowering period extends from May to July. The plants bloom at an early stage of four to five years.

Occurrence and systematics

Yucca reverchonii is close to another representative of the section Chaenocarpa series Rupicolae Yucca rupicola . However, it has the typical twisted leaves and is easy to distinguish.

In Central Europe, Yucca reverchonii is frost-hardy to –18 ° C in the winter months with appropriate protection . However, it is rarely represented in the collections.

Yucca reverchonii is distributed in the Coahuila Desert in the border area between the USA and Mexico in the states of Texas and Coahuila on limestone cliffs and in open grasslands at altitudes between 400 and 1000 meters. This species often grows in association with Yucca thompsoniana , Yucca rupicola and various types of cacti .

The botanical name honors Julien Reverchon . The first description by William Trelease under the name Yucca reverchonii was published in 1911.
