The Ortonguan ( Penelope ortoni ) is a chicken from the family of the Hokko chickens (Cracidae).

The Latin additional species refers to the American nature observer James Orton (1830–1877).

The bird is only found in Colombia and Venezuela .

The distribution area includes flatlands , preferably very moist, mossy forests of the foothills of the western Andes up to 1500 m altitude. As the only representative of the genus , its habitat is limited to the biogeographical region of Chocó, where it occurs together with the rust-bellied guuan (Penelope purpurascens).

The species is monotypical . Previously, it was as the Andenguan ( Penelope montagnii considered to belong).

features

The bird is 58 to 63 cm long. It is the only representative of its genus without pale areas on the head and on the wings, it is strong dark brown and evenly colored with a gray-brown hue on the neck and head. It has bald blue eyes, dull red legs and a prominent red dewlap that is smaller than the rust-bellied guuan. The rump is not red-brown either. The comparably large and sympatric occurring Sichelguan ( Chamaepetes goudotii ) does not have a red neck cloth.

voice

The male's call is described as a repeated high-pitched sound, as a guttural "waou" that can be heard from afar, and the warning call as an excited "konh-konh-konh-konh".

Way of life

Hardly any data are available on lifestyle and breeding behavior.

nutrition

The food consists of small fruits that are believed to be sought in the treetops.

Hazardous situation

The population is considered to be endangered ( vulnerable ) due to habitat loss and hunting pressure.
