Os tribasilare

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The os tribasilare (" basal bone ") is a skull bone that is formed by the growing together of the body of the sphenoid bone ( corpus ossis sphenoidalis ) and the basal part of the occiput ( pars basilaris ossis occipitalis ) at the base of the skull . In children, the two bones are connected by a cartilaginous structure ( synchondrosis ), the spheno-occipital synchondrosis . At puberty this ossifies ( synostosis ), so that between the ages of 18 and 25 a uniform bone is created. This forms the clivus of the posterior fossa . In terms of developmental history and comparative anatomy, however, the tribasilare is made up of two bones.
