Oscar Besemfelder (born May 10, 1893 in Memmingen ; † November 28, 1965 ) was a German lutenist and singer.

Life

After attending the elementary school in Memmingen, Besemfelder visited the Schondorf am Ammersee school home from 1907 . During this time he learned to play guitar in self-study. After graduating from high school, he trained as a bank clerk and was deployed as a paramedic in World War I. While he was beginning to study singing in Munich, he met Heinrich Scherrer , royal Bavarian court lutenist and former member of the Bavarian State Orchestra. He recognized Besemfelder's talent and introduced him to the guitar maker Hermann Hauser , among others , whose lutes Besemfelder later played.

Besemfelder gave his first concert in 1921 in the hotel "Bayerischer Hof" . He perfected his technique and permanently expanded his artistic repertoire, which was largely shaped by the German culture. In total, he had over 4000 appearances worldwide. He also corresponded with John Meier again and again . He also gave lessons himself, but did not found his own school. Christof Stählin was one of his students .

Besemfelder remained unmarried and determined a foundation as the main heir for his life's work during his lifetime. In his home town of Memmingen, where his urn was buried in the forest cemetery there, the Besemfelderweg now bears his name.
