Oschnaviyeh ( Persian اشنويه; Kurdish : Şino ; formerly also Uschnu or Uschnuya ) is an Iranian city in the province of West Azerbaijan and is located near the Turkish and Iraqi borders. Oschnaviyeh has about 32,600 inhabitants, the majority of whom are Kurds . Oschnaviyeh is located west of Lake Urmia at 1,415 m above sea level on an old road that leads over the Kel-i-Schin -Pass and Rawanduz to Mosul . The city is surrounded by mountains, which ensure a mild climate even in summer.
There is a lot of agriculture around Oschnaviyeh. Thanks to the mountain springs, water is always available. Products include wheat, beetroot, grapes and apples.
Oschnaviyeh has a long history and is home to Hurrian and Urartian sites. In Assyrian sources Oschnaviyeh appears as Suguniya and was founded by Shalmaneser III. attacked.
