Oskar Birckenbach

Oskar Birckenbach (born August 18, 1881 in Schweinfurt ; † June 6, 1948 in Regensburg ) was a German painter, graphic artist and art teacher.

Oskar Birckenbach was born in Schweinfurt in 1881 as the son of a royal chief magistrate. In October 1904 he began studying at the Munich Art Academy with Gabriel von Hackl . From 1910 he took on a teaching position at the Oberrealschule (today's Goethe-Gymnasium) in Regensburg . He also became a drawing teacher and lifelong mentor of the illustrator Alfred Zacharias .

From 1919 to 1921 he worked for the expressionist magazine “ Die Sichel ”, which was published by his friends, the poet Georg Britting and the painter Josef Achmann . He also publishes pictures in the magazines "Weg" and "Aktion".

Oskar Birkenbach is one of the quiet in the country. To the people who can wait. In his thirties, he has not yet appeared in public. The war also prevented the sources of his work for him. Some woodcuts by Oskar Birckenbach are in the LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) collection, including Landscape 1919, Family 1919, Woman and Child 1919 . The Städtische Galerie Regensburg has his portrait of Josef Achmann in its collection.
