Oskar Painter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oskar Painter (* 1972 in Canada ) is a Canadian physicist who deals with optics in the nano range.

Painter received his PhD from Caltech in 2001 , where he became an Assistant Professor in 2002 and an Associate Professor in 2008 . Since 2011 he has been co-director at the Kavli Nanoscience Institute . In 2012 he became Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen and received a Humboldt Professorship in 2013 . However, he left this position in 2014, returned to Caltech and has only been represented by a small group at the Max Planck Institute since then.

He deals with quantum optomechanics , that is, the quantum mechanical behavior of nanostructures in interaction with light. He uses the weak light pressure to prepare and study mechanical quantum resonators. This has applications on communication networks in integrated optics and high-precision, quantum-limited sensors.

He is co-founder of the Xponents Photonics company . Painter is a member of the IEEE , the Optical Society of America, and the American Physical Society .
