List of train stations in Norway |
The Østbanestasjon (German Ostbahnhof ) at Jernbanetorget in Oslo , Norway , is the original terminus of the Hovedbane to Eidsvoll . In everyday usage it is also referred to as the Østbanen . It was completed in 1854 and expanded in 1882. Until it was replaced by the new Oslo Sentralstasjon main station , it served as a station for the railway lines east of Oslo.
Station building
The station building was built according to a design by the architects Heinrich Ernst Schirmer and Wilhelm von Hanno . The red brick building is still standing, built into the new central station, but without the tower and the original platform hall .
After the opening of the Østfoldbane , the station had to be expanded. The platform hall was rebuilt and two new wings in plastered brick were added towards the port and Jernbanetorget, designed by the architect and Stadskonduktør Georg Andreas Bull , who had also designed the Vestbanestasjon beforehand . The facade was richly decorated in the neo-renaissance style . The extended Østbanestasjon was completed in 1882.
Most of it is still there, but the platform hall now serves as a shopping mall .
