biography

After Eritrea gained independence on May 24, 1993, President Isayas Afewerki appointed him as the country's first Minister of Education. As such, he initiated the transition of the school system of the revolutionary Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) to a national school system. In addition, all graduating classes (Grade XII) in the country were required to complete the Sawa Defense Training Center (Warsay Yika'alo School).

As part of a government reshuffle, President Afewerki appointed him the new Foreign Minister on April 18, 2007. Saleh Mohammed is also a member of the Unity Party of People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ).

Shortly after taking office, Eritrea and Iran began to develop their economic ties. At the beginning of May 2008, he and Finance Minister Berhane Abrehe traveled to Tehran at the head of a delegation and prepared a meeting that same month between President Afewerki and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad . In September 2008, Canada refused to issue an entry visa , which led Eritrea to severe criticism of Canada.
