Osphya bipunctata is a beetle from the family of the Dark Beetle (Melandryidae).

features

The beetles have a variable size (5–11 mm) and a variable color. This ranges from solid yellow to black. The edge or the seam can be yellow. The males are generally slimmer than the females. There are male specimens with spherically thickened rear thighs ( femora ). In addition, the rear rails ( tibia ) in some males have a large, curved tooth at the end. The females' hind legs are always slender.

Osphya bipunctata is native to the western Palearctic . The species is represented in large parts of Europe. Its main area of ​​distribution is in Southeast Europe. The occurrence of the species ranges from the south of England and the Iberian Peninsula in the west to the Caspian Sea in the east. The species is not very common in Central Europe, and even rarer in the north.

Way of life

The beetles are seen between the beginning of April and the end of June. The beetle species prefers light deciduous forests as well as sun-exposed forest edges and hedges as habitat. The beetles are particularly found on flowering hawthorns ( Crataegus ), but also on dogwood ( Cornus ), snowball ( Viburnum ) and common bird cherry ( Prunus padus ).
