Osterberg is a district of the Lotte municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia . The Latin name Mons oriens is also given in various sources .

history

The place goes back to a peasantry who was first mentioned in 1251. The monastery of the Order of the Crosses , which was built in 1410, shaped the district and was an important part of the Lotte community until 1633: it was abandoned in 1538 as part of the Reformation , which was introduced in the county of Tecklenburg by Count Conrad von Tecklenburg. The canons did not return until after the Count's death in 1557. Count Adolf von Tecklenburg placed the monastery under secular administration in 1618, but eleven years later Emperor Ferdinand ensured with his restitution edict of March 6, 1629 that the Catholics got back the confiscated goods and pens. During the Thirty Years War the Swedes took the monastery in 1633, which meant its final end. After the departure of the Knights of the Cross, the former monastery church was initially still used for services, but according to a testimony from 1665 it had already fallen into ruin by that time. Johann Diederich von Steinen , on the other hand, reported in 1720 that there was still regular preaching in the “extremely beautiful church there”.

Apart from a few remains, the monastery buildings have not been preserved; On top of the ruins is an approximately 600-year-old listed courtyard. A hop garden was set up in Osterberg to commemorate the art of brewing beer from the Kreuzherren. There is also a memorial stone that was erected in 2001 on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the town.
