The Osthafen Tunnel was an industrial railway tunnel to connect the Osthafen in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg .

Structure and course

Coming from the Osthafen, the 245-meter-long tunnel  passed under the Stralauer Allee  / Elsenstrasse / Alt Stralau intersection as a 123-meter-long half trough frame made of reinforced concrete . The girder grate cover consists of tightly mounted rolled girders and is made with concrete filling or precast reinforced concrete parts. Below the ring rail line a vaulted tunnel section closed (length approximately 100 meters) with connection to the ring road -Gütergleisen at Ostkreuz to.

history

The tunnel was built between 1907 and 1913.

Due to the conversion of the port area into a media and fashion location since the mid-1990s, the siding for the east port and with it the tunnel itself were shut down on May 1, 2005.

In the course of the renovation work on the tracks at Ostkreuz station, an approximately 100-meter-long tunnel section in the area of the Ringbahn was filled in in spring 2011, and the vaulted ceiling was also partially removed.

Due to the poor structural condition of the Osthafen tunnel, it was no longer possible to drive over it for heavy traffic. Therefore, the tunnel section under the crossroads was filled with 3600 m³ of liquid concrete from the end of 2016 to April 2017, but the actual tunnel structure was not demolished.
