The Oststadtschule is a listed school building in the east of the city of Eisenach in Thuringia . At the beginning of the 2013/2014 school year, the city's first community school was set up in the building previously used as a regular school .

history

The Oststadtschule was opened in 1900 with 727 students and eleven teachers and named in honor of the then heir to the throne Wilhelm Ernst School. The first rector of the school was Ferdinand Werneburg, who also gave lessons as a math teacher, his successor in office was Dr. phil. Eduard Leidolph.

At the eastern edge of the school grounds, a separate street section was created - today Schulstrasse , which branched off from what was then Wilhelm-Ernst-Strasse (now Friedensstrasse ). The extensive school grounds already had a school garden. A now neglected children's playground was also originally located on the school premises. The generously dimensioned and for the time already modernly equipped school marked the center of the "Oststadt" district, which was newly built after 1900 and was predominantly inhabited by (rail) workers and employees.

The original catchment area of the school also included the Eisenach suburbs of Rothenhof , Fischbach (the village school there was closed in 1900), Hofferbertaue and the streets of Heinrichstraße , Langensalzaer Straße , Karolinenstraße , Im Palmental and Weimar Straße with others to the north and east of Eisenach's main train station Back streets. Only the establishment of the Eisenach prefabricated building area " August Rudloff " on Petersberg led to a significant reduction in the catchment area of the Oststadtschule.

The Karl-Alexander-Bad on the left bank of the Hörsel was just a five-minute walk south of the railway facilities with the Eisenach freight station . It was reached through a 50 m long pedestrian tunnel at the Köppingbrücke between Gothaer Straße and Eichrodter Weg , which was walled up in the 1980s and which was also used as a way to school for the schoolchildren living in this part of Oststadt.

In 1914 1200 students were schooled. A short west and east wing were attached to the three-story main building, Altstadtstrasse 30, to protect them. The south side was enclosed by the semicircular single-storey arcade with a crenellated crown. The atrium and arcade designed in this way were partially replaced by an extension to the gymnasium during the last renovation phase (2001-03).

During the Second World War , the undamaged school building was used as an emergency hospital at times. During the GDR era, the school was run as the 3rd polytechnic high school and named after Erich Mäder , a Thuringian SPD member of the state parliament and educator, who was murdered by the National Socialists in 1934 . At the school in the school year 1988/89 1053 pupils were taught in 35 classes by 71 teachers.

With the school year 1991/92 the Oststadtschule was run as the 2nd state regular school in the Eisenach school network plan. After checking the still largely original structure, the school was entered in the Eisenach monument list of the Free State of Thuringia in 1993. From 2001 to 2003 the building was comprehensively modernized with the conversion and expansion of the sports hall and the installation of a photovoltaic system . The school network concept of the city of Eisenach provides for the dissolution of the regular school at the end of the 2012/13 school year and the establishment of a community school at the site from the start of the 2013/2014 school year.

With the announcement of the new school network plan in May 2011, the closure or rededication of the Oststadtschule became public, which immediately met with fierce resistance from the Eisenach population and the Eisenach city council.

At the beginning of the 2013/2014 school year, the previous Am Petersberg primary school was relocated to the Oststadtschule building and shares the building with the first Eisenach community school. It is planned that the community school will cooperate with the Elisabeth-Gymnasium Eisenach . By the registration deadline on March 16, 2013, 13 future fifth graders had registered to attend the new community school.
