The Elisabeth-Gymnasium is one of two state high schools in the city of Eisenach in Thuringia . With around 650 students, it is the largest grammar school in the city. The school building, erected between 1936 and 1938, is one of the few examples of National Socialist architecture in Eisenach that is a listed building. The school is named after Elisabeth von Thuringia .

history

In order to meet the increased demand for schools in the city of Eisenach, which grew rapidly in the 1930s, the city administration acquired the property of a former gardening center in Nebestrasse in the north-west of the city in 1936 and had the building of today's Elisabeth-Gymnasium built on it.

On August 13, 1939, the school was opened as the Hans Schemm School , named after the Gauleiter of the Bavarian East Markets, Hans Schemm, who died in 1935 . During the Second World War , the school was used as a hospital and officers' mess, among other things . The building was badly damaged in the fighting during the Second World War .

After the end of the war, the war damage was repaired and the school operated under the name Theodor-Neubauer -Oberschule as a polytechnic high school during the GDR era . The teacher training institute also used part of the premises until 1960, when it was moved to the building of the Luther Gymnasium on Predigerplatz.

On September 2, 1991, at the beginning of the 1991/92 school year, one of three high schools in the city of Eisenach was opened in the former secondary school. Since June 19, 1992, the school has been called Elisabeth-Gymnasium . A partnership with the Elisabethschule Marburg has existed since 1992 . In the same year the “Association of Friends and Sponsors of the Elisabeth-Gymnasium e. V. ".

Since 1996, the grammar school has been in contact with the small Russian town of Gusev in the Kaliningrad Oblast and organizes, among other things, regular aid projects and transports for needy children at an orphanage there.

In 1996 the student project "Living under the swastika - searching for traces of Jewish life in Eisenach" was awarded the Student Peace Prize.

Since the school year 2012/13, the school has been an internship school at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena .
