Osuitok Ipeelee
Osuitok Ipeelee (* 13. November 1923 in Neeouleeutalik Camp, Nunavut , † 31 December 2005 in Cape Dorset , Canada ) was a Canadian Inuit - sculptor and printmaker .
life and work
Oshaweetok / Oshooweetook B known as Osuitok Ipeelee, lived in Cape Dorset throughout his life. His ancestors lived in West Baffin Island and were known for their ornate carvings. His sculptures made of green soapstone , mostly caribou and other arctic animals, as well as his woodcut prints, have made the artist known far beyond Canada as a representative of Inuit culture and the Cape Dorset school.
Occasionally sculptures by the artist can be found in auction shops.
