Oswald Richter (born June 1, 1878 in Prague , † April 8, 1955 in Hanover ) was an Austrian botanist in the spirit of Gregor Mendel . His botanical author's abbreviation (he also described new algae ) is “ O. Richt. ".

Life

Oswald Richter was born the son of the director of a high school in Prague. He graduated from the German grammar school in Prague , studied at the University of Prague and was awarded a doctorate summa cum laude in 1903. phil. PhD. The Austrian Emperor presented him with the " sub auspiciis Imperatoris " ring of honor .

In 1912 he was awarded the Ignaz Lieben Prize . The theme of the award was "Physiology of Algae".

In 1920 he was appointed associate professor for botany, product science, technical microscopy and mycology (fungal science) at the Brno University of Technology. In 1927/1928 he was rector at this university.

The botanist Hans Molisch was an important teacher . The directory of Richter's publications contains 157 publications. They include the areas of experimental plant physiology, especially nutritional physiology, plant pathology and pathological plant anatomy, microchemistry and applied botany, bacteriology, biology and photochemistry.

He developed a process for the use of nettle fibers, fiber nails , for fabric production.

After the Second World War, the family moved to Hanover, where he became a visiting professor at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Hanover.

Oswald Richter was married and the father of four children. He died on April 8, 1955 in Hanover.
