geography

The Otematata River is formed around 7 km southwest of the 2009  m high Kohurau , which is located in the Saint Marys Range of the Oteake Conservation Park , by the confluence of several creeks (mountain streams). From its point of origin, the river meanders through narrow mountain valleys northwards, and then flows into the Lake Aviemore reservoir after around 40 km east of the Otematata settlement .

In its southern part, the river runs partly over the geological fault of the Otematata Fault .
