Othmar Zeidler (born August 29, 1850 in Vienna , † June 17, 1911 in Mauer near Vienna ) was an Austrian chemist . As part of his inaugural dissertation ( doctoral thesis ), Zeidler synthesized the compound dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane for the first time , which later became very important as an insecticide, DDT.

Zeidler's doctoral thesis at the University of Strasbourg under the direction of Adolf von Baeyer had a purely chemical-scientific background. Zeidler did not recognize the importance of the substance he synthesized and did not experience its use. The insecticidal properties of DDT were not recognized until more than 60 years later by Paul Hermann Müller .

Zeidler returned to Vienna after completing his studies , where he later took over the pharmacy Zum Archangel Michael in Vienna XV .
