Otiorhynchus cribricollis is a beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The 7–8 mm long weevils are covered with dark brownish scales. The pronotum is very roughly punctured. The wing covers have an egg-shaped shape and are not pointed towards the tip. The coarse dot stripes that run across the wing covers are at least as wide as the spaces between them.

distribution

The original range of Otiorhynchus cribricollis extends over the European Mediterranean area. The species has spread to the south of Central Europe and North Africa. The species was also introduced in North America, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. In Australia, the weevil is found in Western and South Australia.

Way of life

Otiorhynchus cribricollis is a parthenogenetic species. The adult beetles appear (in the northern hemisphere) from the end of May. The polyphagous beetles feed on the leaves of various fruit and ornamental trees, especially olive , apple and fig trees as well as citrus plants . They eat the leaves from the outer edge in a notch-like manner. In addition, the beetles in Australia are considered pests on grapevines . The flightless beetles are mainly active at night. During midsummer the beetles take a rest phase . The beetles usually lay their eggs on the ground from October. The larvae hatch after 10-14 days . The larvae develop in the soil where they feed on roots. They go through 10 stages. The pupation phase lasts between 3 and 4 weeks and usually takes place in April and May.
