Otoniel Mota

Otoniel Mota , also: Othoniel Motta , (born April 16, 1878 in Porto Feliz , São Paulo (state) ; † August 14, 1951 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian classical philologist, Romance scholar , Lusitanist , grammarian and translator.

Life

Otoniel Mota studied at the seminary of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil and in 1910 became pastor and professor of exegesis and biblical archeology, as well as high school teacher for Portuguese in the state of São Paulo. In 1924 he returned to the city of São Paulo and founded the Associação Evangélica Beneficente (AEB, Evangelical Charity Association), which is still flourishing today, to support those suffering from tuberculosis.

From 1936 to 1939, Mota was the first Brazilian professor of Portuguese (successor: Francisco da Silveira Bueno ) at the University of São Paulo, which was newly founded in 1934 (as the successor to the Portuguese Francisco da Luz Rebelo Gonçalves ). He headed the São Paulo City Library.

Mota was a member of the Academia Paulista de Letras (Cadeira 17).
