Ottagono Poveglia is a small fortress island in the Venice lagoon just 16 meters south of Poveglia . The island has the floor plan of a regular octagon ( Italian Ottagono ) with a side length of 20 meters. It has an area of 0.28 hectares or 2800 square meters. The bank is fortified with a wall. The cannons stationed on the island monitored the entry of ships heading north from Malamocco from the 16th to 19th centuries .

The military conflicts with the Ottomans , which culminated in the naval battle of Lepanto in 1571 , prompted the Senate of the Republic of Venice to secure the entrance to the lagoon. A number of octagonal fortifications (ottagoni) should contribute to this. The cannons on the fortress island of Ottagono Poveglia had the task of stopping any intruders into the lagoon who had managed to break through the fortified passage of Malamocco . The octagons were almost finished by 1574.
After the war for the Cretan Candia (1646 to 1669), the island was fortified more strongly, similar to the other islands. After that, however, the five Ottagoni (in addition to Ottagono Poveglia, these are Ottagono Alberoni , Ottagono San Pietro , Ottagono Ca 'Roman and Ottagono Campana ) were neglected until they were modernized again from 1726.
After the fortress islands no longer corresponded in any way to the changed political and military conditions, they were abandoned in the 1960s and 70s. The island of Ottagono Poveglia is state-owned, but no longer has a function. A bridge temporarily connected the island with the neighboring Poveglia.
