As Ottaviani intervention was a short critical analysis of the new "Ordo Missae" known about signed document. The approx. 15-page text (dated June 5, 1969) was published on the initiative of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre by a group of conservative theologians, including the later Sedis-vacantists Michel Louis Guérard des Lauriers (1898–1988; excommunicated in 1983) and Joaquín Sáenz y Arriaga ( 1899–1976; excommunicated in 1972), elaborated. Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani was persuaded to co-sign a cover letter and Cardinal Antonio Bacci by the Principessa Elvina Pallavicini (1914-2004). Both cardinals forwarded the document to Pope Paul VI. on September 25, 1969.

The subject of the “investigation”, which is divided into eight chapters, is that of Paul VI. New edition of the Missale Romanum published on behalf of the Second Vatican Council . According to the title, it is not an exhaustive document on the subject. Only a few points are highlighted and discussed. The liturgical reform is heavily criticized and theological concerns raised.

Theologically, the “investigation” criticizes an overemphasis on the character of the meal of the Eucharist and too little emphasis on the sacrifice as well as the real presence of Christ during the change . This criticism also applies to the removal of the tabernacle from the altar and installation in a special place in the sanctuary or in a side chapel. Further theological concerns concern passages in the text which reduce the importance of the priest in comparison to the church people who celebrate with them.
