occupation

Otto - The series is a German comedy series by Otto Waalkes that was first broadcast on RTL in 1995 . She gained fame primarily through the use of scenes from 32 old Edgar Wallace films , which were dubbed, in some cases also colored and cut together with additional scenes to make sketches.

background

In addition to Otto Waalkes, Bernd Eilert , Robert Gernhardt and Peter Knorr were also active as authors for the series. The digitization of the Edgar Wallace films and the laborious cutting of Otto Waalkes into the old image material drove the production costs to 10 million  DM , the record for a German comedy series at the time.

It was first broadcast on January 30, 1995 on RTL. The 13 episodes were shown on Monday evenings at 8:15 p.m. The first episode had 7.64 million viewers, but the odds got worse from week to week so the series was viewed by many as a flop. The series was repeated at irregular intervals, in addition to RTL also on RTL II and Super RTL .

In 2005 Otto - Die Serie was released on DVD.

Reviews

The reviews were mostly negative. Shortly after the pilot episode was broadcast, Ralf Schlueter from the Berliner Zeitung criticized that the series offered too little new: “The way he mixed his age-old jokes with age-old films was very clever and technically very loving. It wasn't particularly funny. ”Barbara Sichtermann von der Zeit also found the humor no longer in keeping with the times :“ Otto would only have had a happy comeback if he had dared venture into the nineties instead of, of all things, the Middle Ages of German filmmaking to hide. And if he had consistently refrained from varying old successes such as 'English for Insiders' and thus riding to death. " Michael Reufsteck wrote in his television dictionary :" The technical achievement of fitting Otto into the old scenes was impressive, but was in no relation to the joke that jumped out. "
