Lonzo (born September 29, 1952 in Hamburg ; † November 13, 2001 there ; civil Lorenz Westphal ) was a German musician. His nickname was Der Teufelsgeiger von Eppendorf .
life and career
Lonzo was a member of the Hamburg music groups Pensionnerband and Leinemann . He also formed the group Okko, Lonzo, Berry, Chris & Django together with Okko Bekker , Berry Sarluis, Chris Hermann and Django Seelenmeyer , later with Wolfgang Timpe for Seelenmeyer Okko, Lonzo, Berry, Chris & Timpe .
In 1974, together with his long-time companion, the pianist Gottfried Böttger , he recorded the single Hamburg '75 , which referred to the then flourishing Hamburg scene . This included Udo Lindenberg , Otto Waalkes and Hans Scheibner .
His most commercially successful time for Lonzo was in 1980, when his singles Der Zaubergeiger (The Devil came to Eppendorf) - a German version of the song The Devil went down to Georgia by Charlie Daniels - and Die Dinosaurier were released. Lonzo was addicted to alcohol for a long time , but was able to overcome his addiction. In May 2001 he resumed his concert career. He died of a heart attack on November 13, 2001 in Hamburg at the age of 49 and was buried in the Volksdorf cemetery in Hamburg. A stele on which a violin, his real name and his pseudonym can be seen, reminds of the musician.
Lonzo had two daughters.
