Otto Aloys Count Huyn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Aloys Graf Huyn (born September 4, 1859 in Graz , † January 8, 1928 in Kremsmünster ) was an Austrian officer. He was major general in the Austro-Hungarian army and commanded the Austrian troops in the last cavalry battle in history.

Life

Otto Graf Huyn , as a colonel, commanded the Kuk Dragoon Regiment "Archduke Joseph" No. 15 during the First World War . This belonged to the 4th Cavalry Division under Major General Edmund Ritter von Zaremba .

Otto Graf Huyn was in command of the last great cavalry battle in world history, which took place on the eastern section of the front during the operations in Galicia in 1914. At Jaroslawice on August 21, 1914, the Austrian riders met the cavalry brigade General Markow of the Russian 10th Cavalry Division (Major General Baron Fyodor Keller), neither side emerged as winners from the battle. Due to the threefold Russian artillery superiority, the onslaught of the Dragoons were brave, but ultimately in vain and caused very high losses.

The effects of this meeting were mainly characterized by the horse carcasses left behind on the battlefield and ushered in the end of the 19th century cavalry tactics.

At the end of September 1914, Count Huyn was replaced as regimental commander after he fell ill (probably cholera) and retired a year later with the rank of major general. He died on January 8, 1928 in Kremsmünster.
