Otto Andres (winemaker)

Otto Andres (born April 3, 1907 in Kreuznach ; † December 30, 1985 ibid) was a German winemaker and viticulture and agriculture functionary.

Life

Otto Andres graduated from high school in Bad Kreuznach in 1926. He then completed a practical agricultural training and studied at the Universities of Göttingen and Bonn Agriculture . In 1930 he became a member of the Corps Rhenania Bonn . In 1931 he completed his studies as a qualified farmer. After working for a few months at the Birkenfelder Landesbank in Kirn , he joined his father's Gutleuthof winery in Bad Kreuznach in April 1932. In 1935 he took over his father's business. He took part in the Second World War as a sergeant in the reserve and as an officer candidate .

Andres was committed to promoting agriculture and in particular viticulture in Rhineland-Palatinate . He was a founding member of the Rhineland-Nassau Farmers and Winegrowers Association, which he chaired from 1950 to 1976. He was a member of the board of the German Farmers' Association . From 1965 to 1969 he was its vice-president.

As a co-founder, Andres was a member of the Presidium of the German Viticulture Association from 1949 to 1976 . As a member of the board of the former Rhineland-Nassau Chamber of Agriculture , to which he belonged from 1956 to 1970, he was one of the driving forces behind the merger of the three chambers of agriculture in Rhineland-Palatinate. From 1971 to 1976 he was the first president of the newly created chamber.

Andres was also a member of the administrative board of the Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank , the Raiffeisenverband Mittelrhein and the Central Committee of German Agriculture . The first garbage sewage sludge - composting plant in Bad Kreuznach was built by his initiative. He promoted scientific research into the effects of compost on agricultural soils and soil erosion in vineyard slopes .
