Otto Antscherl

Otto Antscherl (born June 8, 1895 in Prague , † September 1942 in Riga ) was a Czechoslovak scientist of Jewish origin. He dealt with Romance philology and literature in the German language. He was a concentration camp prisoner and was a victim of the Holocaust .

life and work

Antscherl studied Romance and English at the Charles University in Prague and worked as a secondary school teacher. In 1927 he received his doctorate from Erhard Preiziger and took a teaching position at the university. Attempts to do his habilitation failed in 1929 and 1938. When the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was established in March 1939, he lost his professional livelihood because of his Jewish descent. He was deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp on August 3, 1942 and to the Riga ghetto on August 20 . He died there in September. The exact date of death is not known.
