Otto Brand

Otto Brand (* 1930 in Burgsinn , Lower Franconia ; † February 28, 2014 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman.

Career

Brand grew up in his hometown. He was a member of the Order of the Pallottines . In 1962 he came to Montevideo , Uruguay as a pastor for German-speaking Catholics . He gave religious instruction in the German School and traveled several times a year inland to prepare the Germans living there for the reception of the sacraments. On his initiative, a Christian retirement home was built in Melilla together with the German Protestant community .

In 1971 he was appointed pastor of the parish of Rincón del Cerro by the Archbishop of Montevideo, Cardinal Barbieri , where he worked for ten years. In 1989 he opened the Children's Center Our Lady of Lourdes in Montevideo , which currently cares for 135 children from broken families. In 2008, an early intervention course for toddlers and their mothers was set up. Brand headed several Catholic social institutions in the city, including day-care centers, a dormitory for children and young people with disabilities, and a social station in the slums. He gained a high reputation in the process. The "Foundation Pater Otto Brand" continues his life's work.
